Wells (Professor of History in the Department of Afro-American and African studies of the University of Michigan) gives the dramatic account of the fight for freedom in New York City in the 1830's where pro-slavery New Yorkers were locked in a deadly battle for freedom with abolitionist. The Kidnapping Club follows the deep roots of slavery, capitalism, corrupt politics, policing and the struggles of civil rights activists in the pre-Civil War north.
